Revaluing wool

The project "From Dutch wool and seaweed" wants to revive the value of Dutch wool by converting it into high-quality, sustainable carpets. Despite the excellent properties of wool, such as insulation, recyclability, biodegradability, antibacterial effects and fire resistance, the wool from over 800,000 sheep in the Netherlands remains partly unused every year. There is no market for it and in the worst case it ends up in landfills. The mission of The Knitwit Stable is to produce fair wool (textile) products with respect for nature and the community, seamlessly combining craftsmanship, tradition and sustainability. They achieve this by restoring the value of Dutch wool as a raw material.

Seaweed as a natural dye

Where wool is a rich but underutilized natural resource on land, seaweed is its aquatic counterpart. It grows abundantly in our oceans without the need for agricultural land or fresh water. Zeefier, a producer of natural textile dyes, has developed a natural dye from seaweed as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical dyes. This innovative approach allows them to create aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly colors. The wool in this rug is dyed entirely locally using eco-friendly seaweed dye harvested from Dutch waters. The project focuses on minimizing the ecological footprint through local production in the Netherlands and the EU, with a 100% traceable supply chain.

The designer

The carpet was designed by Nienke Hoogvliet, co-founder of Zeefier. She gained recognition in 2014 with her project 'Sea Me', a carpet made of seaweed yarn, hand-knotted into an old fishing net. Her work captures the contrast between contemporary environmental problems and the world of wonders that the sea offers. The project 'From Dutch Wool and Seaweed'is the first joint project of Zeefier and The Knitwit Stable. Each carpet tells the story of sheep grazing on the Dutch heathlands, the seaweed growing in our waters and the carpet tufted on Dutch soil; a symbiotic collaboration between nature, local production and innovation.

The carpet of Dutch wool and seaweed

Shared vision

Driven by a shared vision to revive the hidden potential of local raw materials and local production, The Knitwit Stable and Zeefier joined forces to take a stand against the polluting textile industry. Their first joint project, the carpet 'Van Nederlandse Wol en Wier' (Dutch Wool and Seaweed), symbolizes what is possible when innovation and respect for people, animals and the ocean come together.

Local, but large-scale

Although their core values are rooted in local production, Zeefier and The Knitwit Stable strive for sales on an industrial scale. Because only by offering large-scale solutions can the positive impact of their products spread further. This makes their mission ambitious, but perhaps even more necessary in a world where sustainability is no longer a choice, but a requirement.

One-of-a-kind of machine

For example, the industrial carpet 'Van Nederlandse Wol en Wier' is machine tufted by the Dutch company Best Wool. For lovers of one-of-a-kind carpets, there is also the handmade carpet, which is tufted in the social workshop Millenerpoort. These integral collaborations show that locally produced and socially responsible products are possible.
