Aukje
Plaid of Dutch-French mohair
This wonderfully warm, soft and luxurious plaid is made of mohair wool from adult angora goats. We make our cardigans, sweaters and scarves from our young angora goats because this wool is soft on the skin. Mohair products are generally made from the younger goat, but of course it would be a shame to only use our young animals and not to use the beautiful wool that the adult goats give us in a way that can be done. Until now we could use this wool by mixing it with other wools. We now make Aukje from our adult goats! We are very happy that with these plaids we have a good destination for our mature mohair, which has a somewhat coarser structure than young mohair. Despite the slightly coarser structure, the mohair has the nice property that it is still very soft.
The making of Aukje starts at our farm and studio in Baambrugge, where we keep our angora goats. We shear them twice a year and after shearing we sort the wool by quality. We collect the mature mohair and ship it to Northern France.
In France we have a partnership with farmers who keep mohair goats. This is one of the few places in Europe where Angora goats are kept on a larger scale. By working together with French farmers, we stimulate the conservation of the angora goat and thus the development of mohair in Europe. The French wool is, just like with us in Baambrugge, checked and sorted and then combined with our wool and prepared for transport to our permanent processor in Italy.
In Italy, the wool is washed, carded and combed at a wool processing company. The wool is spun into yarn and prepared for further processing. The wool is then (possibly) also dyed here. Both processing and dyeing are done according to GOTS standards. This means that production takes place in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. In addition, the product must also meet certain minimum quality requirements in order to receive this quality mark. For example, the processing company has its own water treatment plant to separate the valuable wool fat and reuse the water. In addition to the quality mark, we regularly visit the manufacturers ourselves to be able to see with our own eyes whether, in our opinion, the processing is taking place correctly.
Back in France, Aukje really comes to life! The plaids are made on weaving machines from the spun yarn.
Ultimately, the plaids come to us in Baambrugge, where we pack them with love for you so that you can enjoy your new favorite plaid on the couch: Aukje.
