Next in this series: Get to know our intern Maxime! Maxime is our first intern from Wageningen University, where she is pursuing a master's degree in Resilient Farming and Food Systems. Maxime wants to work in the field where agriculture, food, and textiles intersect. Read her story below!
Lifelong knitter
My love for knitting started early when my mother and grandmother taught me to knit as a child. At the age of six, when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I confidently replied: a Dutch knitter in New York. I think little Maxime would be proud to see what I do every day now at The Knitwit Stable!
From Colorado to Baambrugge
I grew up in the mountains of Colorado and have always had a passion for nature. I'm also a true foodie, an avid knitter, reader, fermentation enthusiast, and a budding gardener, currently living in Amsterdam.
Before my master's, I earned a double bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies and Business Administration, specializing in accounting and Corporate Social Responsibility, at the University of Colorado – Boulder. During my studies, I focused on sustainable business practices and the role of companies in creating positive change.
Before my master's, I worked as an Auditor in Climate Change and Sustainability at EY. Nevertheless, I decided to quit this job to further pursue my passions for sustainable agricultural practices. In particular, I am interested in natural and local fibers, with a focus on wool production and processing.
When I started looking for an internship for my master's, I immediately knew where I wanted to work and contacted The Knitwit Stable to ask if they were interested in a 'new kind of intern'. At The Knitwit Stable, I have contributed to how the journey towards circular and regenerative practices can be continued — through land transformation, circular research, grassland index, grazing plans, and grant applications. In addition, I help Cees with the animals and assist with the production of knitwear.
Why I love working here
Every day it feels magical to arrive at The Knitwit Stable. It’s wonderful to be so closely involved in so many links in the wool chain — from the soil and the sheep to the final product! I feel incredibly inspired by the great team and have learned so much from everyone here!
