Tufted wool from Dutch sheep

Tufted wool

Our tufting wool is made from the wool of the Kempen Heath sheep, blended with the wool of Dutch brown sheep. This composition makes the yarn particularly suitable for tufting carpets, wall hangings, and other creative projects. The wool from these sheep is rarely used in the Netherlands, which is precisely why we are giving it a new purpose. By processing it into tufting yarn, a local, distinctive raw material takes on a valuable role in sustainable projects. The yarn is two-ply and undyed. Each cone contains approximately 7,000 meters, enough for both large and small projects. Its fine structure makes the yarn pleasant and easy to work with. Moreover, using this wool contributes to the preservation of the heathlands where the Kempen Heath sheep actively graze. This way, you combine creativity with sustainability and craftsmanship.

For a pneumatic tufting gun you can use 6 wires.

The special characteristics of the Kempisch Heideschaap

The soft and high-quality wool from which this blanket is made comes from the Kempisch Heideschaap from Landschapsbeheer De Wassum in Roermond.

Kempen Heath sheep, with their thick, woolly coats, are more than just grazers; they are the silent protectors of the natural landscape.

Grazing ensures that the heathland remains rich in herbs and vital, and that young trees remain short. The sheep's fleeces spread the seeds of spent herbs to new growth sites, and their manure stimulates soil life. In this way, Kempen Heath sheep play a crucial role in maintaining the natural balance in valuable nature reserves.

Wool cools in summer and warms in winter, is highly resistant to bacteria, flame-retardant, and biodegradable. Wool is self-cleaning and therefore rarely needs washing. Airing is often more than enough.

The history of tufting

Tufting is a textile technique in which threads are "pricked" into a base fabric to form soft loops or tufts. Its origins likely lie in Central Asia, where ancient carpets and rugs were made in a similar way. Around the beginning of the 20th century, tufting was industrialized in Europe and the United States, allowing carpets to be produced faster and more cheaply. Hand tufting survived as a craft, particularly for unique carpets and wall hangings. In modern times, tufting has become popular with makers and artists for its creative freedom and tactile quality. Today, it is used both manually with tufting guns and by machine in interior design, fashion, and textile art.

Tufted wool from Dutch sheep

The yarn is a two-ply yarn of Nm 7.0/2, made entirely from 100% Dutch wool. The Kempen Heath sheep are primarily raised in the border region between the Netherlands and Belgium and have been an essential part of the regional agricultural system for centuries. Their wool is of fine quality, thanks in part to historical crossbreeding with merino sheep in the 19th century. Each cone contains approximately 7,000 meters of yarn, making it suitable for both small-scale craft projects and large-scale production. The fibers are carefully spun into a consistent thread, ensuring uniform thickness and strength during processing. The yarn is suitable for weaving, knitting, crocheting, and tufting, making it versatile. The wool contributes to the ecological management of the heathlands because the sheep graze the grassland. The wool is breathable and insulating, making it ideal for textiles that combine comfort and durability. The yarn's color is created by blending the wool of white and brown sheep. The cone's 2 kg weight makes it easy to calculate the correct quantities. This yarn is an excellent choice for designers who value quality and durability. It offers an ideal balance of strength, flexibility, and aesthetics, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
