AaBe x Knitwit blanket

The Knitwit Stable proudly presents the renewed AaBe blanket, an heirloom that has symbolized warmth, solidity and timelessness in Dutch households since 1929. This sustainable variant is made from wool from Kempen Heathsheep. With this project we continue the rich tradition of the AaBe blanket, now in a fully traceable and biodegradable version. For generations, the AaBe blanket provided warmth and security in countless Dutch homes. The Knitwit Stable has picked up the thread again and revived the AaBe blanket with respect for tradition and a focus on sustainability.

Experience the ultimate warmth and softness with our new, sustainable blanket. This luxurious blanket embraces you with unparalleled comfort and offers you a cozy cocoon during cold days. Let yourself be wrapped by the warmth and softness this blanket has to offer - a perfect addition to any home.

We have the blanket in two beautiful undyed colours. The first variant has an off-white side and a sand-colored side. The second variant is completely in an unpainted sand color.

The special characteristics of the Kempisch Heideschaap

The soft and high-quality wool from which this blanket is made comes from the Kempisch Heideschaap from Landschapsbeheer De Wassum in Roermond.

Kempen Heath sheep, with their thick, woolly coats, are more than just grazers; they are the silent protectors of the natural landscape.

Grazing ensures that the heath remains rich in herbs and vital and that young trees remain short. In their fleece, the sheep spread seeds of faded herbs to new growth sites, and their manure stimulates soil life. In this way, Kempen Heath sheep play a crucial role in maintaining the natural balance in valuable nature reserves.

Wool cools in the summer and warms in the winter, is highly resistant to bacteria, is fire-resistant and biodegradable. Wool has a self-cleaning capacity and therefore hardly needs to be washed. Airing is often more than enough.

About De Wassum

Landscape management De Wassum uses flocks of sheep in the management of nature reserves in Brabant and Limburg. The sheep contribute to the maintenance of the heathland and biodiversity in these areas. For several years now, De Wassum has been actively improving the quality of the wool through targeted breeding and better sorting of shorn wool. With The Knitwit Stable as a partner, a value chain is created in this way.

Dutch wool AaBe x Knitwit blanket from Kempisch Heideschaap

The AaBe blanket has been a symbol of warmth and Dutch solidity since 1929. In collaboration with De Wassum, Stichting The Knitwit Stable is breathing new life into this iconic vintage blanket, with respect for nature, craftsmanship and tradition.

Transparent production process

The AaBe blanket is spun with wool from Kempen Heath sheep. Kempen Heath sheep, with their thick, woolly coats, are more than just grazers; they are the silent protectors of the natural landscape. Sheep grazing ensures that the heath remains grassy and vital and that young trees remain short. In their coats, the sheep spread seeds of faded herbs to new growth sites, and their manure stimulates soil life. In this way, Kempen Heath sheep play a crucial role in maintaining the natural balance in valuable natural areas. To ultimately make the blanket, The Knitwit Stable travelled across Europe. In an authentic family blanket factory in Northern Italy, the blanket was carefully crafted. Spun with wool from Kempen Heath sheep, they left the blanket undyed, in its natural colour. At the end of its long lifespan, the AaBe blanket can continue its natural cycle, as food for the soil.

A message for change

The AaBe x Knitwit blanket is more than just a wool blanket. It is an heirloom passed down from generation to generation. By continuing the tradition, The Knitwit Stable aims to show that high quality and sustainability are not mutually exclusive, but rather mutually reinforcing. Every aspect of the AaBe x Knitwit blanket tells a story in which every fibre counts – from the grazing sheep in the field to the warm blanket on your couch. From the sheep that gave us the wool, from the hands that made it, to the people who used it and the values it represents. It is a story of balancing tradition and innovation, with an emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility. The Knitwit Stable shares an important message: by becoming aware of every step in the value chain of a biodegradable product, we can not only value it in the right way, but also give it back to the earth with respect.
