Sjors

Sheep wool socks
There they are! The typical goat wool sock but then made of sheep wool with alpaca. In the past people already knitted socks. People repaired the socks themselves with pieces of leftover yarn, because knitting socks is quite expensive and time-consuming. With the enclosed piece of wool and darning needle you can now repair the socks yourself. We have knitted a short and a long version of the Sjors so there is something for everyone!
From residual wool to socks - Towards a regenerative bio-circular chain of Dutch wool
Coarser wool from Dutch sheep is often seen as a waste product and we want to do this differently at The Knitwit Stable. With these socks we save a lot of wool and we want to show that there are also circular ways of production.
The production of these socks was made possible with the support of the Province of Utrecht and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. Europe invests in its countryside. We were able to purchase a machine specifically for knitting socks. Through this project we were able to set up collaborations with other farmers, shearers and shops and there were educational activities to spread the knowledge about bio circular processes.
Washing and maintenance
Wool socks have many good properties, they have excellent moisture regulation, they are self-cleaning, comfortable, do not retain unpleasant odors and are nice and warm. Unfortunately, they do wear out faster than synthetic socks. That is why we have put together a number of tips to ensure that you can still enjoy your socks for as long as possible.
- Make sure you buy socks that fit well, socks that are too small wear out faster.
- Do not just walk on the socks, wear slippers at home, for example. Dirt on the floor also causes the socks to wear out faster.
- Change a pair of socks, so that you do not always wear the same pair.
In addition, you rarely have to wash wool socks. Wool naturally contains lanolin, this is a layer of fat that ensures that no dirt can penetrate the fiber. Wool can also absorb a lot of moisture without becoming sticky and does not develop unpleasant odors, because wool kills mold and bacteria immediately.
To freshen them up, you can hang them outside or, for example, in the bathroom while showering.
If you are going to wash the socks, it is best to do this as follows;
- Preferably wash them by hand and otherwise on a wool wash program (30 degrees)
- Use a wool detergent (normal detergent contains enzymes that damage the wool fiber, causing them to wear out faster)
- Do not put them in the dryer and do not put them on the radiator, but let them dry lying down
