The special properties of merino wool

Merino is an adaptable natural fiber that comes from the merino sheep. Compared to traditional Dutch wool, merino’s fibers are much thinner and therefore softer. For this reason, merino has many characteristics that make it wonderful for all kinds of garments. Not only is the merino soft but it also doesn’t itch or wrinkle. Garments made from merino are very breathable, meaning that they stay cool in the summer and keep you warm in the winter even when damp. Additionally merino has antibacterial properties so garments hardly need to be washed; airing them out is often more than enough. This way your favorite sweater will last for generations.

Our merino is sustainably sourced from our own merino sheep as well as other Dutch merino farmers. All the merino farmers we source from are vetted by The Knitstable Stable. Additionally all of our merino hasn’t been chemically treated like superwash which preserves the natural look of merino for our garments.

Choose your color and size

The colours of our merino wool are undyed, natural or synthetically dyed. The colours sand and taupe are made with the natural colours of the fur. The synthetic wool in dark blue and dark grey is GOTS certified dyed. This means that the most sustainable dyes possible have been used. If you opt for the naturally dyed dark blue (dyed with indigo) or dark grey (dyed with bark of wood), bear in mind that the dye may run off a little at first.

Stitch ratio: Test piece 10 x 10 cm = 31 stitches and 45 rows after washing, needle 3 mm. Washing instructions: 30 degree wool wash, tumble dry on low temperature if necessary to get the shrinkage out completely.

We are very proud of our Dutch Merino. In 2019 we had our own merino wool processed in Italy in collaboration with 4 other merino breeders in the Netherlands. We have done the entire processing process as sustainably as possible. Both washing and dyeing are done in GOTS certified companies. GOTS Is a standard that uses as little polluting dyes and chemicals as possible. Unfortunately we cannot call the wool GOTS certified because we as farmers are not certified, but our wool is of course completely free of chemicals and animal welfare is completely okay. We've been in Italy every step of the way and captured this in a video. There is about 400 meters on a 50 gram ball of Dutch Merino. We recommend that you always knit a sample first and then wash to check the number of rows and stitches.
